Impressions: Vitamin K and the 8th Day

Circumcision is one of the most well-known ideas when it comes to the Jewish and Christian religions. Some say it’s done simply because the Torah instructs people to do it; other say it’s done due to our barbaric traditions stemming from our days in Africa. But what most don’t say is that science determined which one of those situations is actually true – back in 1953.

The Torah tells us to circumcise every male boy on the eight day of their life. Obviously, there are a few alarms going off already: why just 8 days? Why not 30, or even a year? The baby is so weak, why should we risk such a dangerous operation!? Most especially because this comes from some book that some guy wrote thousands of years ago before people knew anything in depth about science at all.

But 1953 knew a lot about science. One thing non-Jewish scientists discovered was about something called vitamin K. Vitamin K is that vitamin which clogs cuts and stops the blood from bleeding continuously from the body. Without Vitamin K, whenever we get a cut, we would bleed out until our body has no blood left. Vitamin K is responsible for sealing the cut and saving our lives.

What happens if we put our blood into a balloon, and then pop the balloon? Even when our blood contains vitamin K, the blood will drain out of the balloon until nothing is left. But all of a sudden, when the blood is in our body, the system works to clog the cut.

These scientists found that before the 8th day, the baby doesn’t have enough vitamin K to seal a cut. On the 8th day, however, vitamin K surges to a maximum 110%! This never happens again throughout the entire life of a human. Only on the 8th day does a baby boy get an extra 10% vitamin K!

Who knew this information thousands of years ago? Like we said earlier, there is no way someone could have known this information – they didn’t even know what a vitamin was. Never again does the body have an extra 10% of vitamin K than on the 8th day – not the 6th, not the 7th, not the 9th – the 8th. And only on the 8th day is a male baby to be circumcised.

Torah has expressed the Will; Science has expressed the details. The human body itself is a testament to the Divinity of the Torah.
